Following President Joe Biden's veto of a bill intended to prevent pension fund managers at the Labor Department from making environmental, social, and governance investments, Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) issued a scathing statement.

The Senate approved the bill on March 1, with Manchin and Sen. Jon Tester (Mont.) being the only two Democrats to support it. Rep. Jared Golden (Maine) also voted for it in the House.

Manchin condemned Biden for taking "absolutely infuriating" action, claiming that the Administration's "radical policy agenda" is exacerbating the financial, energy, and national security challenges that Americans are facing. He argued that allowing the Labor Department to make ESG decisions weakens the nation's and its citizens' security.

He added, "West Virginians are under increasing stress as we continue to recover from a once-in-a-generation pandemic, pay the bills amid record inflation, and face the largest land war in Europe since World War II," the statement added. "The Administration’s unrelenting campaign to advance a radical social and environmental agenda is only exacerbating these challenges."

Although the House could vote to overturn the veto as early as this week, this effort is unlikely to succeed as Republicans lack the two-thirds majority required to override a presidential veto. Biden had claimed that the bill's supporters wanted to risk retirement pensions. However, this contradicts the bill's original intention, which was to prioritize financial returns over non-pecuniary benefits.

Sen. Manchin's statement highlights the tension between liberal and conservative politics in the United States, especially regarding economic and energy security. The disagreement between the two parties has been made clear by Manchin's rejection of Biden's decision and underscores the need for bipartisan collaboration to reach a resolution.
