On Tuesday, the second largest school district in the United States, the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), was forced to close after the Education Workers United union, a branch of the Service Employees International Union Local 99 (SEIU Local 99), announced a three-day strike.

The strike is scheduled to take place from Tuesday, March 21, through Thursday, March 23. Union members, including 50,000 education workers in K-12 schools, early education centers, and community colleges in Southern California, voted to approve the strike and are demanding equitable wage increases, more full-time work, respectful treatment, and increased staffing levels for better student services.

United Teachers Los Angeles, representing 35,000 local educators, supports the strike, and members have been instructed not to cross picket lines imposed by workers. The union was also in support of in-person learning a year into the COVID pandemic.

At a press conference, LAUSD Superintendent Alberto Carvalho stated that the strike will make it "virtually impossible to keep schools open" and that the union is "simply refusing to negotiate" despite a "historic offer on the table." According to Fox News, Max Arias, the executive director of SEIU Local 99, commented that workers have been living on "poverty wages" and laid the blame for the strike on the school district. He said, "Students have been sacrificing for too long in school environments that are not clean, safe or supportive for all. Too many workers have been subjected to harassment simply for demanding change. Enough is Enough!"

According to the outlet, the average salary of workers at LAUSD is $25,000 a year, including part-time hours.
