Newsom is pressured to dish out billions of dollars for reparations to black people for slavery.

The movement is gaining steam, and now Newsom has an ultimatum to deal with.

Fox News reports, “The California Reparations Task Force, which was created by state legislation in 2020, is considering a proposal to give just under $360,000 per person to approximately 1.8 million Black Californians who had an ancestor enslaved in the U.S., putting the total cost of the program at about $640 billion.”

The task force’s final draft and recommendations will be given to the California Legislature. Then, they’ll be on their way to the Governor’s desk to be signed. Many say that Newsom needs to prepare to use his powers as Governor to make reparations happen if the legislature doesn’t.

Activists aren’t just pressuring Newsom. They’ve also been pressuring the federal government to approve reparations. On a national level, these would more than likely apply nationwide instead of individual states.

Racial injustice groups and a few Democrats are pushing Biden to use an executive order to establish them. Biden has been extremely quiet about the topic. Biden admits that he’s open to studying the topic, which would determine how the reparations would impact people. However, he has yet to say anything about whether he supports it. He’s also shied away from discussing whether he will back a bill for reparations.

In California, the process is already taking place. Per Fox News, “Last year, the state task force made several preliminary recommendations in an interim report. A final report with the panel’s official recommendations is due by July 1 to the state legislature.”

Newsom has yet to say how the state would manage to pay reparations to black people, given the fact that California is already facing a deficit.
