Barricades were erected outside Manhattan Criminal Court on Monday, in anticipation of the potential arrest of former President Donald Trump, who has declared his intentions to run for office again in 2024.

This potential arrest has been met with strong condemnation from the New York Young Republicans Club, who have organized a peaceful protest for Monday night. The group said, "Join us in peaceful protest of Alvin Bragg's heinous attack on President Donald J. Trump and the legitimacy of the American judicial system." House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and GOP Congressman Jim Jordan have also voiced their opposition to the possible indictment, which is being crafted by New York City District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

At the center of the charges is an alleged misdemeanor offense that took place in 2016, when Trump is said to have paid his attorney Michael Cohen a sum of money that was then passed on to porn star Stormy Daniels as “hush money.” The charge is that Trump recorded this payment as a legal fee when the funds were actually used for a different purpose. Bragg is now said to be elevating the misdemeanor charge to a felony, alleging that Trump intended to use the first crime to engage in a second crime, election fraud.

In response to the reports, House GOP sent a letter to Bragg expressing their concern. The letter start with, "the indictment of a former President of the United States and current declared candidate for that office. This indictment comes after years of your office searching for a basis—any basis—on which to bring charges, ultimately settling on a novel legal theory untested anywhere in the country and one that federal authorities declined to pursue. If these reports are accurate, your actions will erode confidence in the evenhanded application of justice and unalterably interfere in the course of the 2024 presidential election. In light of the serious consequences of your actions, we expect that you will testify about what plainly appears to be a politically motivated prosecutorial decision."

As the potential indictment of Donald Trump looms, the Republican Party is standing strong in opposition. It remains to be seen whether District Attorney Bragg will press charges, and the future of the presidential election hangs in the balance.
