Russian President Vladimir Putin made a surprise weekend trip to the Russian-occupied city of Mariupol, Ukraine, where he was caught on video being heckled by an anonymous woman, as reported by the BBC.

Footage broadcast on Russian state television showed Putin chatting with purported residents outside an apartment complex when a woman's voice could be heard in the background exclaiming, "It’s all lies, it’s all just for show!" Men standing beside Putin were seen looking around afterward.

The purpose of Putin's trip was to mark the ninth anniversary of the annexation of the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea from Ukraine, as stated by Dmitry Peskov, a Kremlin spokesman. Putin also visited memorial sites, a concert hall, and the city’s coastline, according to the Associated Press. Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin informed state television that people started to return to Mariupol once they saw that reconstruction was underway.

After he visited Mariupol, Putin headed to Rostov-on-Don, a southern Russian city, to meet with Russian military leaders and troops at a command post, where he conferred with General Valery Gerasimov, who is in charge of the Russian military operations in Ukraine. The day before Putin’s trip, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for him over his involvement in abducting Ukrainian children. Mykhailo Podolyak, chief of staff for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, commented that Putin was "drawn to the crime scene." Podolyak further stated that Putin came to "admire the ruins of the city and mass graves."

In his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Putin accused the West of provoking and fueling the Ukraine crisis to maintain its international dominance and preserve the unipolar world order, as reported by The Wall Street Journal.

Putin's visit to Mariupol shows how the Ukrainian crisis has become a battleground between Western and Russian powers. While the International Criminal Court has ordered his arrest, Putin's trip to Ukraine reinforces his commitment to retain control of the region and demonstrates his stance against the West.
