The Dearborn Police Department released video footage that shows one of its shooting a man inside the police station.

However, Fox2 Detroit notes that the police officer did so only because there was a 33-year-old man who came into the police station with a gun and pointed it around. The man was shot and killed just a week before Christmas at the police station.

Ali Naji, 33, was killed on December 18, 2022, when he went into the police station and pulled a gun in the lobby of that area. Fortunately, the gun that Naji had malfunctioned and jammed before he could fire it. A police officer in the station shot and killed Naji at that time. It had to be done to ensure that Naji did not continue to pose a risk to anyone else at the police station.

Dearborn and Michigan State Police both stated that Naji walked into the lobby of the police station and attempted to shoot an officer. When the gun jammed, this gave to police in the station enough time to shoot the man and take away the risk that he posed to everyone in the nearby area.

Fox2 states that an officer was behind bullet-proof glass in the front lobby. When that officer saw Naji approach him, he knew something was wrong and needed to step back to protect himself. He was right in this case, as the suspect pulled a gun and made a move that might have led to people getting seriously injured or killed if the weapon had been working properly.

After Naji was shot, other officers arrived on the scene and began to assist the officer who was first attacked. Upon recovering the gun, it was discovered that the safety on the gun was off and that there was only one round in the chamber. Naji was taken to the local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Now, Naji’s family has pushed a $10 million lawsuit against the Dearborn Police Department, claiming that excessive force was used in this instance.

Prosecutor Kym Worthy said: “We may never know why Mr. Naji entered the Dearborn Police Department with a loaded weapon attempting to fire it at a police officer. My office will not be issuing charges in this case. Although extremely tragic, this is a clear case where the officer acted in lawful self-defense and in the defense of others,”

On Tuesday, that same prosecutor determined that no charges would be put against the officer.
