Colin Kaepernick remains in the spotlight, but it’s not for the right reasons.

He is known for being a social activist and became well-known when he took a knee during the national anthem to protest racism. Now, he’s back at center stage for calling white parents racist.

Baby Kaepernick was put up for adoption when he was only five weeks old. He’s bi-racial. His father is African, and his mother is Italian. Rick and Teresa Kaepernick adopted him and raised him with his adoptive siblings as their children in their California home.

Recently, he pointed out that he felt having white parents was a problem and that his home was racist. According to Bounding Into Sports, “‘I know my parents loved me, but there were still very problematic things that I went through,’ Kaepernick told CBS’ Adriana Diaz on Thursday. ‘I think it was important to show that, no, this can happen in your home, and how you move forward collectively while addressing the racism that is being perpetuated.’”

One example Colin gives is that his mother criticized his choice of cornrows as a hairstyle when he was young. She told him it was not a professional appearance and that he looked like a thug.

Social media were instantly ablaze with criticism towards Kaepernick. Some say he’s reached a new low by calling his adoptive parents racist. Others point out that they feel bad for his adoptive parents. John Matrixx of Black and White Sports says that what his parents said was not racist and that he’s trying to make money by smearing his parents.

Sports says, “Former NFL Pro Bowl player Marcellus Wiley has been critical of Kaepernick for making a fuss over what he deems a minor issue. In an interview, Wiley stated that his black parents had reprimanded him for looking like a gangster. ‘My parents knew growing up where I grew up that there was an appearance of a gangster,’ he said.” Wiley points out that Kaepernick’s adoptive parents were likely trying to do the same so that he stayed on a positive path.

These are new comments from Kaepernick. He previously said that his adoptive parents helped him stand up to racism. Colin says he isn’t interested in meeting his real parents because his adoptive family is his family. Now that he can throw racism into it, things have changed.
