The Empire State has decided to move forward with “digital licenses.” These are driver’s digital licenses. Some are concerned because it could open the door for people to obtain a license more quickly illegally.
The Post Millennial reports that another concern is that driver’s license information might be stored on a database that could be hacked. It is yet another area where personal information could be at risk, which lawmakers might not have thoroughly thought through when they came up with this plan.
That said, it will be fascinating to see how they try to defend the actions that they have taken with this one. Will their choices make sense for the everyday individual just trying to get by? That is yet to be determined.
Driver’s licenses are used to verify one’s age for purchasing alcohol, firearms, and some other restricted materials. The digital driver’s license plan may make it faster for people to verify their age to buy these items. That is something that many in New York are touting as a significant upside of this program. Others are still curious about how this will come into play and wonder if there are better ways to handle something like this.

The director of identity management for the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators, Michael McCaskil, said that the agency has been working on this digital identification option since at least 2012 and that it is now at a point where it is ready to roll out in New York. That could be a big deal as this is a significant state and may open the door to other states that want to follow this path. At least a few Democratic states are likely to jump on board.
