An investigation into Elon Musk’s Starlink system revealed that criminals in the Amazon forest region of Brazil are using it.

This had authorities concerned about how the technology might be used.

The Associated Press reported that investigators found a Starlink terminal in a functional state near an illegal mining site in the Amazon forest. Benzinga reported that other items authorities took from the illegal site included mercury, gold, and ammunition. This investigation occurred in an area known as Ouro Mil, and First Command of the Capital owns the illegal mine, according to reporting by the Associated Press.

Brazil’s environment agency, IBAMA, has reportedly taken approximately seven Starlink terminals over the last five weeks. This raises the danger levels related to this entire situation. The agency even shared a photo of the latest reported Starlink terminal that it managed to take from the illegal mine this time.

IBAMA’s operations coordinator, Hugo Loss, stated that the technology was “extremely fast and improved the ability to manage an illegal mine.” According to the AP, he also stated: “You can manage hundreds of mining sites without ever setting foot in one,” according to the AP.

Benzinga reports that in September, Musk said that the Starlink terminals were meant to provide Internet access to schools in the Amazon that wouldn’t usually be available.

The Associated Press reports that the plan to use Starlink to bring Internet access to 19,000 schools throughout Amazon has yet to go forward. Thus, the benefits of the Starlink program are not moving forward in the Amazon region. Still, some appear to be taking advantage of the program for their benefit, which is highly troubling for investigators and others in charge of ensuring crime doesn’t get out of control in the area.
