Texas Republicans are set to create a new state law that will make illegal entry from Mexico a state felony, according to reporting by Free Beacon.

Politicians in Texas are saying that they must take this action because there has been a complete failure by the Biden Administration to address the illegal immigration situation at the border.

The bill has been proposed by Republican state representative Matt Schaefer and would create a “Border Protection Unit” to address the surge of illegal immigrants. This is a unit within the more incredible law enforcement systems in Texas. The purpose is to provide law enforcement with the backing they need better to handle the illegal immigration situation within the country.

The Border Protection Unit would have a Governor-appointed unit chief and seek to recruit a militia of civilians to handle the illegal immigration situation that the border patrol has faced for a long time. Under the legislation, someone found to have illegally immigrated to the United States would face up to 10 years in jail and thousands of dollars worth of fines.

“Right now, we can use all the help and any help at all that we can get, because we’re being overrun down here and on the borders,” said Zavala County sheriff Eusevio Salinas.

The bill comes after the state put pressure on the Biden Administration to reimburse the state for the work that it has had to put into making sure that the border was as controlled as possible. There has been a massive overrun of illegal immigrants through the border because Texas doesn’t have the resources to deal with a situation like this.

They have asked for assistance from the federal government, but the Biden Administration has repeatedly rebuffed them for a long time. Given this, it is understandable that many within Texas are fed up and ready to take matters into their own hands. That is what this legislation would do, and many people are all for letting this play out how it needs to.

U.S. Representative Pat Fallon (R., Texas) made a statement on the immigration situation in which he said: “This administration has forced Texas to go it alone when it comes to securing our border,” and “Operation Lone Star has been a critical tool in stemming the tide of illegal immigration, but we cannot do it by ourselves.”
