An American college student is on life support after suffering a brain hemorrhage from an extremely rare blood vessel condition.

Liza Burke, a senior at the University of Georgia, went with friends to Cabo San Lucas for a Spring Break trip. However, she experienced a medical emergency while there due to her blood vessel disorder.

NBC affiliate 11Alive, a local station in Atlanta, Georgia, reported that this happened on March 13.

Today reports that while Burke was eating breakfast with her friends on March 10, she told them she was experiencing a headache and wanted to return to her hotel room to rest. She was taken to a local hospital and diagnosed with arteriovenous malformation. This caused her to suffer a brain hemorrhage, according to a GoFundMe page that has been put up for her medical care and treatments.

An NBC affiliate reports that the student returned to the United States on March 14 and is being treated at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. Her parents are also at the hospital looking over their daughter’s health. Mother Laura McKeithen spoke with 11Alive and said that the medical team at the hospital is hopeful that her daughter will fully recover.

She stated: “They were planning on taking her for an MRI, perhaps some other tests, maybe an echocardiogram,” and, “They said it would be a pretty good time before we have a sense of what’s going on.”

The mother also stated that her doctors had clarified that her daughter had a stroke in the middle of her brain. This kind of thing is severe and requires immediate medical intervention.

The mother stated: “So in terms of places for it to bleed, it’s not the best, but it’s not the worst thing,” and “I’m just glad to be at a competent hospital that has all the equipment that they need and the experience to take care of her.”
