An Arizona school District is helping put power back in the hands of parents with what is benign described as an anti-woke hotline.

This hotline is designed to let parents report inappropriate curriculum, such as lessons that teach Critical Race Theory. Superintendent Tom Horne calls it the Empower Hotline. He says parents should report lessons their children are being taught at school they are concerned about. Although topics like CRT and gender ideology are mentioned, the Empower Hotline is for any lesson that worries a parent.

Fox News reports, “‘We’ve asked parents to call in when they become aware of inappropriate teaching,’ Horne told ‘Fox & Friends First’ Wednesday. ‘As you mentioned, that would include lessons that focus on race or ethnicity rather than individuals on merit, gender ideology, social-emotional learning, or inappropriate sexual content.’”

Parents can call the hotline during standard business hours to make complaints. After a parent makes a report via the hotline, the School District will investigate the report to determine if lessons that tend to stray from academic lessons are taught. This is part of the superintendent’s campaign promise to help eliminate inappropriate material from classrooms. Horne and many others say that this material distracts students from learning academics.

Many blame the restrictions forced on schools and students throughout the pandemic. Now, more than ever, schools need to focus on academics. Nationwide, students need help to meet basic proficiency in standard subjects such as reading and math.

According to Fox, 23 schools in Baltimore reported zero students were proficient in Math. In Chicago, 55 schools stated that no students were proficient in math or reading.

While many parents are on board with the hotline, some are against it. One parent took to TikTok to claim that the hotline is rooted in white supremacy. However, Horne says that race should not matter and we should focus on merit instead of race.

I agree. My daughter was in kindergarten when the pandemic hit. Many children in her class struggled to put spaces in between their letters, and they were in second grade. I saw parents struggling during school closures and spoke with teachers when schools re-opened. Now, more than ever, the focus needs to be on academics to ensure children have the bright future they deserve.
