On Sunday, the El Paso border was heavily fortified with Mexican military and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers as migrants attempted to breach the checkpoint.

The CBP responded by implementing "port hardening measures," including the use of concrete barricades and fencing, according to a report by the Daily Mail.

The officials stated that the group posed a threat of mass entry, with footage showing that most migrants were young men, though women and children were also present. As a result, CBP deployed barricades of barbed wire and other physical barriers along the Mexican side of the Paso Del Norte bridge to prevent further attempts.

Barricades were erected at Stanton Bridge and the Bridge of the Americas, with CBP officials armed with batons and riot shields to control the situation. Some migrants attempted to cross the river to enter the U.S.

Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Texas, noted that such events are detrimental to migrants and their cause, according to KTSM. The attempted surge of migrants comes after a sharp drop in illegal crossings since December.

President Biden's announcement in January that Mexico would accept Nicaraguans, Haitians, Cubans, and Venezuelans under a pandemic-era rule that prevents asylum seekers from entering the U.S. to prevent the spread of COVID-19 was a contributing factor to the drop. The Biden administration has also stated that it would allow up to 30,000 migrants from these countries to enter the U.S. if they applied online, entered through an airport, and provided evidence of a financial advisor.

However, fellow Democrats have criticized Biden's border policies, with Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) suggesting that if the administration continues down its current path, the President will become the "Asylum Denier-in-Chief."
