The Governor’s office called this an “Exposing the Book Ban Hoax” press conference, and they dove right into the fact that many objectionable books are currently in the libraries at public schools in Florida.
DeSantis took about 5 minutes in the video debunking the myth that “Florida has banned books from the classroom.”. Instead, the state has taken complaints from parents about certain books that have been on the shelves in public schools seriously.
Florida has fielded those complaints and has taken appropriate action when necessary. For example, some books complained about include “Gender Queer,” which shows a girl masturbating and performing oral sex on another girl, and “Flamer,” a book about a gay boy who details some of the sexual experiences that he has.

Other books have been the target of complaints from parents across the Sunshine State. “If these materials are not appropriate to show on the news, are they appropriate for children?” and “Today, Governor DeSantis disabused the media’s false narratives surrounding Florida’s educational standards. Florida doesn’t ‘ban books,’ but pornography [is] prohibited in schools, and CRT [Critical Race Theory] will not [be] utilized as educational material.”
The presentation also showed a video posted on social media by a teacher in Jacksonville of empty library shelves. The teacher tried to show the “consequences” of the new book ban laws. However, the teacher lost his job for violating cell phone and social media policies for staff members at the school.
