Conservative commentator Tucker Carlson recently released previously unseen footage from Capitol Hill surveillance cameras showing what the Capitol incursion was like on January 6.

According to Carlson, the footage contradicts the narrative that there was an insurrection or a riot taking place that day. Instead, it shows police escorting protesters through the building, including the so-called 'QAnon Shaman.'

This footage raises questions about what the Capitol Police were doing that day and why doors in the Capitol were being held open for the protesters by individuals in civilian clothes. However, the Democrats' House January 6 committee was a "kangaroo-court farce," as described by Carlson, where only anti-Trump grifters Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger were allowed to participate. As a result, there has been no good-faith public investigation of these questions.

Whoopi Goldberg, a co-host of the talk show 'The View,' criticized Carlson's release of the footage and compared it to something out of George Orwell's "1984." Goldberg stated, "Tucker Carlson took a page from George Orwell’s ‘1984’ and told his viewers to reject the evidence of their eyes and ears…They saw what they saw."

However, Carlson's show made news precisely because he invited viewers to review the evidence with their own eyes and ears and make their call - something which, as he pointed out, few in Washington want Americans to do. Carlson said, "Virtually no one in Washington, Republican or Democrat, certainly not in the news media, wanted to see this tape released tonight."

'The View' also criticized Carlson for calling the incursion "mostly peaceful chaos." However, the show defended the mostly not-so-peaceful chaos that ensued after the death of George Floyd in a segment titled "Protesters Demand Justice in Floyd Case" in May 2020. Additionally, the show lionized the Floyd protests in a June 2020 segment titled "Anti-Racism Protests Span Globe."

Even though police rarely intervened during the summer of 2020, when many cities were given over to rioters with minimal law enforcement intervention, 'The View' lamented that protesters on January 6 were not shown the same "police restraint."

Overall, Carlson's release of the Capitol Hill footage raises important questions that deserve further investigation. Goldberg's criticism of Carlson's release seems to be at odds with her show's defense of other forms of protest that turned violent. The hypocrisy on display highlights the need for a more nuanced and balanced approach to analyzing these events.
