New data from the FBI shows a historic number of gun retrievals ordered due to failed background checks in 2020 and 2021.

There have now been more orders for gun retrievals after failed background checks this year than ever before.

Fox News reports that there were 6,361 gun retrievals in 2020, according to Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) data. These retrievals were when individuals were ineligible to legally own a firearm based on exclusionary factors such as criminal records, disqualifying military service records, mental health history, and more.

There were another 5,203 referrals in 2021, according to data from the National Instant Criminal Background Check System. That is the highest two years of data since this system began keeping data in 1998. This information should be alarming to all responsible gun owners as they should be concerned that it suddenly seems that the government is so eager to try to snap up as many firearms as possible.

The FBI pointed out that the number of gun retrievals is just a small portion of the millions of guns processed via background checks in 2020 and 2021. There has yet to be data available for 2022.

All of this comes out as states are looking at what they can do to pass new gun laws as they are looking over the different things they can do to try to clamp down on gun owners’ rights over the last number of years. That is truly important to the people who want to continue owning and enjoying their guns.

The fact that so many people are under review for their gun ownership rights at this time is something that ought to be at least a little disturbing to everyone, no matter where they stand on the Second Amendment.

On the other end, some states with conservative local governments are doing their best to ensure they continue to protect Second Amendment rights for everyone they can. Nebraska is currently working on a bill allowing people to carry concealed weapons in Nebraska without a permit. However, liberal states seem content to continue to try to do everything they can to keep gun owners down, as they are doing everything they can to clamp down on the ability of people to own guns in this country legally. It is something to continue to keep an eye on.
