The British government allegedly considered a mass cull of all domestic cats in the country as a potential measure to stop the spread of COVID-19, according to former Conservative Party health minister James Bethell.

In an interview with Channel 4, Bethell revealed that the government was initially uncertain about whether domestic pets could transmit the virus, and this prompted the discussion about exterminating cats.

“There was an idea at one moment that we may have to ask the public to exterminate all the cats in Britain,” said Bethell. He also acknowledged the extreme nature of such a proposal, stating, “Could you imagine what would have happened if we wanted to do that? And yet there was, for a moment, a little bit of evidence about that.”

Bethell clarified that the idea was eventually “closed down,” but the fact that it was considered indicates the extent of the uncertainty and fear surrounding the virus at the time. The culling of pets in China during the lockdown was more extreme than what was proposed in the UK, as pets were regularly killed either by their owners or the state for fear that they could spread the disease.

According to multiple reports, the killing of cats suspected of carrying COVID-19 was common in China, with some animals being euthanized without their owner’s permission. In some cases, individual Chinese citizens were said to have thrown their domestic pets out of high-rise buildings for fear of transmission.

Hong Kong also implemented a mass culling of pet hamsters later on in the pandemic over concerns that they could spread the virus. These extreme measures reflect the fear and uncertainty surrounding COVID-19 and how it has led to drastic actions even towards innocent pets.
