Democrat Cassie Chambers Armstrong won a seat in the Kentucky Senate in the deeply red state.

She will become the newest member of the chamber, but the State Senate will remain dominated by Republicans.

McGarvey has served in the chamber for ten years, including four years as the top Democrat. She is a Louisville Metro councilwoman, and she managed to pull off the win with 77% of the vote in the special election to fill the seat. She will take over the seat, according to Fox News.

Armstrong released a statement about the win, saying she was "honored that the voters have entrusted me to go to the state Senate to stand up for our values and work to solve the problems facing our commonwealth."

Another special election is set to take place in Kentucky on May 16th to replace a vacancy in District 28. Republican Ralph Alvarado left the Senate to lead the state health department in Tennessee. Therefore, the seat will be up for grabs. However, this seat is expected to remain in Republican hands.

Generally speaking, the State Senate in Kentucky is Republican-dominated. There is much more representation for Republicans than Democrats because the state is filled with many more conservatives than liberals. The same is true for the state as a whole.

The fact that a Democrat won a special election, in this case, is interesting but not shocking. The fact is that the seat was held by someone previously the top Democrat in the State Senate chamber at one point. Therefore, it is fair to say that Democrats were rightfully favored to win in this case.

There is still some interest in checking out the subsequent special election for the District 28 seat. Keep an eye on this for May 16th.
