A New York Middle School vendor faced intense backlash after serving chicken and waffles for lunch.

They served watermelon for dessert. It’s not the meal itself that has people furious. Instead, they wanted to serve it on Black History Month’s first day.

Initially, the school faced backlash, but they quickly released a statement informing everyone that the vendor had changed the lunch menu without telling them. The principal still released a statement apologizing. Per Fox News, “‘We are extremely disappointed by this regrettable situation and apologize to the entire Nyack community for the cultural insensitivity displayed by our food service provider,’ Nyack Middle School Principal David Johnson said in a statement.”

The statement from the principal continues as the principal points out that he is disappointed the vendor did not serve the items on the published menu. He further points out that it’s a shame they chose to serve foods that stereotype the African American community. Families were also disappointed that the change was missed and so culturally insensitive.

The school district’s vendor, Aramark, has also released a statement regarding the unfortunate incident. Per Fox News, “While our menu was not intended as a cultural meal, we acknowledge that the timing was inappropriate, and our team should have been more thoughtful in its service,’ the Aramark statement said. ‘This was a mistake and did not represent the values of our company, and we are committed to doing better in the future.’”

The vendor will work with the school to ensure that employees receive sensitivity training to prevent future incidences like this. The released statement also points out that they view this as a great learning opportunity and are committed to working with schools to achieve the same goals.
