Chicago police have arrested the fewest number of people in twenty years.

Traffic stops are down. Tickets being written are also down. Officers on duty are calling in fewer crimes. It looks like crime is drastically decreasing, but that’s not the case. Instead, police are slowly giving up.

According to Fox News, “‘In the past, I might see a guy with a gun in his waistband, and I’d jump out and chase him,’ one decorated officer said, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. ‘No way I’d do that now.’”

While arrests are going down, crime is going up. It’s a disturbing trend that is plaguing the windy city. Chicago saw a drastic increase in homicides in 2020. Last year, the city broke its record with an astounding 800 homicides in one year. Shootings are on pace to raise eyebrows again this year. According to Fox News, “So far this year, shootings and killings for the first half of 2022 are down roughly 17% and 10%, respectively. However, the city is still on pace to break the 600-homicide benchmark by the end of the year, WTTW reported this month.”

Massive changes in what police are allowed to do have resulted in fewer arrests. There are restrictions on vehicle pursuits, foot pursuits are not encouraged if a suspect runs, and police officers are not supposed to chase people for minor offenses.

Police officers point out that they are less likely to interact with armed suspects. They say that some crimes aren’t worth their lives. Police used to feel needed, and now they are targets. After fatal shootings that have killed police officers, many men and women in blue are wondering if people care and if a foot pursuit is worth their life.

The defund the police movement, previous riots, and incidents such as the death of George Floyd have led to many officers pulling back. In a dangerous city like Chicago, it causes crime to skyrocket.
