According to Breitbart, Riley Gaines, a swimmer for the University of Kentucky, said that she feels betrayed about how women’s sports are not protected now.

She tied with transgender athlete Lia Thomas in the 200-meter freestyle race at the NCAA Championships. She wrote an op-ed for Fox News arguing that women’s sports must be protected.

She wrote the op-ed in honor of the 37th National Girls and Women in Sports day, a day which is celebrated on February 1st. She argued that the concept of women’s sports could be eliminated if biological men were allowed to compete in those sports.

Gaines wrote the following:

“Males are hurdling themselves forward in national rankings stealing scholarships, titles, and opportunities from women who have worked their whole lives for those accomplishments.”

Gaines recalled that she had to compete with Thomas in the 2022 NCAA Championships. She was upset that Thomas rose from 462nd when competing on the male side of the sport to competing for championships as a female. UPenn and the NCAA nominated Thomas for the NCAA Woman of the Year award. All of this felt like a slap in the face to Gaines.

Continuing to write in the op-ed, Gaines insists that allowing biological males to compete in women’s sports isn’t just about competition. She said these sports also help build essential character traits that extend into people’s personal lives. Thus, she feels it is wrong to continue catering to allowing transgender athletes to compete in women’s sports.

She wrote the following:

“These are life-long skills that present unique advantages contributing greatly to success within careers and relationships.”

and

“Ernst and Young found that 94% of women holding senior leadership positions (CEO, CFO, etc.) within a company were involved in sports demonstrating that this participation can propel them to success unrelated to athletics.”

She continued by saying that female athletes don’t have an easy path to argue that transgender athletes should not be permitted to compete in women’s sports. That means that while many might agree with the same opinions that Gaines does, it is not necessarily easy for them to voice those opinions. If one does this, then they are quickly labeled as intolerant.
