Gates says that he hopes the problem with COVID will help governments learn what they need to do to prepare for the next one and start taking the threat seriously. He noted that no one handled it perfectly. However, he also points out that these situations are rare, so it’s hard to prepare and manage them in what he would consider ideal.

Gates advises that every country exercises pandemic preparedness at least every five years. This will help ensure that governments are prepared and the world is ready when the next one comes around.

Preparing for the future epidemic that will be way worse than anything we’ve experienced wasn’t the only thing Bill Gates discussed during the interview. He also touched on human innovation, pointing out that our people with high IQs and the tools we have available to innovate are lovely.

However, that also came with a warning. He says bioterrorists could use those same tools and intelligence to create bioweapons. Perhaps this is why he thinks the next pandemic will be a manufactured catastrophe.
