But, Why? 29-Year-Old New Jersey Woman Arrested For Using Fake Docs To Register For High School

Fox News reports that she allegedly tried to pose as a 15-year-old and attend school.

The suspect is Hyejeong Shin, and she was charged with one count of providing a false government document with the intent to verify one’s identity or age. She allegedly gave a fake birth certificate to the New Brunswick Board of Education, according to a release by the New Brunswick Police Department.

Shin was prohibited from the campus grounds after this arrest, but she allegedly continued to text some of the students she met there. School officials have asked students to cut off all contact with Shin. It is unclear why Shin decided to fake her age and pretend to be a high school student to enroll in this school. The motives behind all of that are still under investigation at this time, according to local police.

NJ.com reports that Shin is a 2019 graduate of Rutgers University.

Schools in New Jersey are reportedly required to enroll unaccompanied students even without proper guardianship documentation immediately. After 30 days, the students must provide proper documentation of guardianship. However, Shin clearly could not do that as she is a 29-year-old woman and not a 15-year-old student, as she wanted those officials to believe.

New Brunswick officials said they would review this policy so that they don’t have a similar issue come up again. Superintendent Dr. Aubrey Johnson stated in a board meeting that Shin attended the school for four days before any questions were raised about her age.

According to Fox News, Superintendent Dr. Aubrey Johnson stated that Shin attended some classes in the four days she was enrolled in the school, but she allegedly spent most of her time with guidance counselors.

Johnson stated: “All authorities were immediately notified and the individual in question has now been arrested.”

She also said that all students who had contact with Shin had been asked to cease contact with her immediately. The community is understandably concerned about Shin’s motives for enrolling in a high school. It is still unclear now why she did what she did. Her motives are still under investigation at this time.
