The sanctuary state of California recently broke a new record in issuing driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants.

Breitbart reports that the state has given more than one million illegal alien licenses. According to data published by CalMatters, about four out of every ten illegal aliens in California have picture proof to drive and operate a motor vehicle.

Issuing driver’s licenses to illegal aliens in California started in 2015. The Safe and Responsible Drivers Act gave undocumented residents the right to obtain an AB 60 driver’s license. The AB 60 license is a special license that allows undocumented California residents to drive legally.

However, federal limitations apply. New legislation signed in September also makes non-driver’s California IDs available. The state issues these unique IDs for those who cannot take the driver’s test.

California state data indicates that the Department of Motor Vehicles issued nearly 1.2 million original AB 60 driver’s licenses to undocumented people and more than 822,000 renewals.

According to CalMatters, Luis Alejo, the former Assembly member from Watsonville who authored the bill, said:

“With AB 60, what we did was recognize the needs of many hard-working immigrants living here and contributing so much to our great state.”

Those in favor of the AB 60 driver’s license issued to illegal aliens claim the ID is vital when an illegal alien gets pulled over to avoid driving without a license charge. Such a charge could put them in immigration and Customs Enforcement( ICE) custody for arrest and deportation.

Critics claim that AB 60 and non-driver IDs make undocumented immigrants too comfortable and less afraid of traffic stops or deportation. Others argue the licenses make driving more dangerous for other drivers, assuming these illegal aliens cannot read the street signs.

Even those in favor of obtaining identification and driving privileges fear that the AB 60 license could make it easier for ICE to locate illegals and create a target for deportation. However, according to CalMatters, “Legislators wrote certain protective measures into the original AB 60 bill adding language prohibiting state and local government agencies from using the special license to discriminate against license holders or for immigration enforcement.”

California is not alone in its decision to issue license privileges to illegals. Additionally, 18 other states allow undocumented immigrants to obtain a driver’s license.
