As protests continue across the United States in the wake of the death of Tyre Nichols, Democratic Representative Maxine Waters has spoken out against one of her colleagues, Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema, for failing to back police reform.

“That woman from Arizona, Senator Sinema, who always talks about how she’s so independent, how she does things her own way, how she doesn’t give a darn, I don’t even think she cares about voting rights,” Rep. Waters said in a statement. “She doesn’t give a darn about police reform.”

The outspoken Representative from California made her comments while discussing the death of Tyre Nichols and the protest that have followed. Rep. Waters also criticized Senator Joe Manchin, a West Virginia Democrat, for not supporting police reform legislation.

In a statement, Senator Sinema said she was “deeply saddened” by the death of Tyre Nichols and expressed her condolences to his family and friends. She also said she was “working to ensure that justice is served.”

Sen Sinema also noted that she has introduced legislation to reform police practices in Arizona, and that she has worked with Arizona police departments to “make sure they are implementing best practices for use of force.”

“I will continue to work to ensure that our police departments have the right training, equipment, and resources to serve our communities safely and responsibly,” Sinema said.

Meanwhile, Rep. Waters and other House Democrats are pushing for the passage of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, which would ban chokeholds and other police tactics, limit qualified immunity, and create a national registry of police misconduct.

The bill has yet to be passed in the Senate, and Senate Republicans have indicated they will not support it. It remains to be seen if Sen. Sinema will support it.

Sen. Sinema’s position has been met with criticism, especially from Rep. Waters, who believes that Sinema, along with Manchin, is not doing enough to support police reform. Her comments have been echoed by many across the US who are demanding justice for Tyre Nichols and an end to police brutality.

In the wake of the widespread protests, some have called for Sen. Sinema to take a stronger stance on police reform.

However, it is unclear if Sinema will take a stronger stance on the issue or if she will continue to support her current position. As protests continue across the US, it is likely that the pressure to pass police reform legislation will continue to mount, and it will be up to the Senate to decide how they will respond.
