In a tweet on Friday, President Biden expressed his optimism for America, prompting an immediate backlash from some on Twitter who responded with the phrase, “Jesus take the wheel.”

According to Fox News, Biden wrote, “We have so much to look forward to. So much promise and potential of what we can accomplish together.” The tweet came in the wake of his first full day in office, during which Biden signed 17 executive orders and presidential memoranda, including re-entering the U.S. into the Paris climate accord, revoking the Keystone XL pipeline permit and halting the construction of the border wall with Mexico.

The New York Post reports that the tweet was met with criticism, with many pointing out Biden’s failure to implement policies to address the nation’s mounting economic issues, including unemployment and rising healthcare costs.

“The idea of being ‘optimistic’ about our future under the Biden admin is laughable,” one Twitter user wrote. “After four years of having a government that worked to help Americans, we’re now stuck with a government that’s focused more on globalism and their own power than the people they are supposed to serve.”

“Biden is out of touch with the everyday working-class American,” another user tweeted. “He’s not doing anything to help the millions of people who are struggling due to the pandemic. We don’t need optimism, we need real solutions.”

The responses to Biden’s tweet demonstrate a growing disconnect between the president and some of his constituents. Despite his campaign promise of “unity,” many swing voters feel he is staking out far-left positions that are outside of the mainstream of most Americans.

“Biden is trying to pander to the far left,” said one voter, who asked to remain anonymous. “He’s taking the country in a direction that isn’t what most of us voted for. We need policies that help us, not global initiatives that have nothing to do with us.”

As Biden continues to move forward in his presidency, it will be interesting to see how the public reacts to his policies and decisions. Until then, the public will have to wait and see if his optimism for America.
