A university art teacher plans to sue a university after being let go.

She warned her students of the material she would be showing ahead of time, but some people were still offended. Now, she’s been let go.

The teacher sounds like she did something horrible. She showed her students pictures of religious figures. According to The Blaze, “Dr. Erika Lopez Prater, who teaches a class about Islamic art, was fired by Hamline University for showing images of the religious figures despite warning students multiple times that she would do so.”

She showed pictures of various religious figures, including the Islamic prophet Muhammad. However, even though she pre-warned students that she would be doing so, one student still chose to attend class.

After seeing the pictures, Aram Wedatalla, a Muslim student, complained about seeing the paintings. After Wedatalla complained to administrators, the teacher no longer has her teaching position. The President of the university issued a massive apology to students for the incident.

Even though the university stands behind its decision, Dr. Prater is suing. According to Fox News, “Attorneys with the law firm Fabian May & Anderson announced the lawsuit Tuesday afternoon, according to local Minneapolis-St. Paul affiliate Fox 9.”

She’s allegedly suing for at least $350,000 for defamation and discrimination. According to Fox News, the firm representing Dr. Prater says, “She claims that she has also suffered significant emotional distress due to her mistreatment by Hamline. In the long term, Dr. López Prater claimed that Hamline’s conduct had damaged her personal and professional reputation and future employment prospects.”

Hamline, a small Minnesota university, did apologize for using the term ‘Islamaphobic’ when speaking about the situation. However, the university’s President points out that the image projected on the screen for several minutes is an image that Muslims are forbidden to look upon.

Here’s the thing, though: the teacher didn’t force the student to look at the image. The student knew ahead of time that the image would be displayed. So, why didn’t the student ask to be excused or speak with the teacher privately regarding the matter?
