For years, Disney has been its special District in Florida.

This lets it govern itself. However, DeSantis talks of a plan to strip Disney of that privilege, which will cost Disney millions. Now, employees are backing DeSantis.

Disney has been its District since 1967, allowing it to govern its land. It can even issue land taxes. According to The Western Journal, “According to the Orlando Sentinel, the District provides its public services, such as utilities, and can issue bonds, levy taxes, and oversee land use and environmental protections.”

However, in April 2022, DeSantis signed a bill to stop that privilege. The bill will dissolve the District, known as the Reedy Creek Improvement District. The District will see a new team of management staff in June and will then be forced to pay the $700 million they have accumulated in unsecured debt.

Initially, the union expressed concerns about job security and the benefits they receive. However, now they’ve changed their tune. Per The Western Journal, “Anything has got to be better than what we currently have,” Tim Stromsnes, communications director for the Reedy Creek Professional Firefighters Local 2117, told the Sentinel.”

He wants new management to make them the excellent first responders team they are designed to be. Stromsnes further expressed that he’s watched DeSantis manage Florida and trusts him to do an exceptional job with the District, too.

An estimated 200 people are employed in the District to provide emergency services. They’ve long complained about policies. Per The Western Journal, “Reedy Creek union members have long complained of understaffing, poor employee support and have said that changes made to the fire department’s mutual aid policies with neighboring departments have compromised the safety of guests and Disney employees, the Sentinel reported.”

Now, thanks to DeSantis, first responders have a chance at a brighter future and smiling when they head to work in the morning.
