These Kids Are Screwed: Teachers To Get Educated On “Indigenous, Non-Eurocentric” Origins Of Mathematics Teachers in Ontario are now informed that the math we all know and use daily has deep colonial roots.

That’s why they’ll go on a retreat to learn more about Indigenous math.

The Blaze reports, “The two-day retreat promises teachers will ‘deepen their understanding of incorporating Indigenous mathematics systems to enhance - and transform - the teaching and learning of mathematics for all students.’”

There’s a complete event page that tells teachers and families about how the workshop can benefit students. Per The Blaze, “The about section reads, “Indigenous knowledge systems, pedagogies, and methodologies can enhance and support the teaching and learning of mathematical concepts, ‘including that “educational spaces can uplift Indigenous knowledge systems and create transformative learning for all students.’”

This workshop goes right along with Ontario’s new math curriculum. The new curriculum says, “Mathematics has been used to normalize racism and marginalization of non-Eurocentric mathematical knowledge, and a decolonial, anti-racist approach to mathematics education makes visible its historical roots and social constructions.” It goes on to point out that the importance placed on mathematics by society is subjective.

The idea that math is racist is not new. Other people have also spoken out against the racism of addition and subtraction.

Per The Post Millennial, “The idea that math is racist has been circulating for some time now. In September last year, Heather Theijsmeijer, a Canadian teacher, drew media attention for saying that ‘There are many math education practices that we (white folk) don’t see as racist or supremacist, because they are so ingrained in our background and experiences (and we have been the ones to benefit from them.)’”

The new approach to math isn’t just something we’ll see in Canada. It’s already making its way into California schools, too. It’s only a matter of time before the left tries to overhaul the entire education system.
