Virginia Lt. Gov. Winsome Sears is speaking out against one Virginia high school’s policy on “equality.”

This policy has resulted in withholding notifications about merit awards won by students attending that school.

Sears spoke on Fox News about this and said: “This is not the way. This is not America,” and followed that up: “You don’t take the bread out of one child’s mouth for another child. We’ve done that in America. It doesn’t work.”

The Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology reportedly should have notified students who had received merit awards based on their performance in the classroom. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation presents these awards, but students should have been given notice of winning these awards right away by the school.

Many parents of students in the school expressed their outrage over the delay in the notification of the awards. One parent, Harry Jackson, spoke with Fox & Friends about his frustration with what the school had done in this case.

Jackson said: “This was not a one-time error.”

He followed up by saying: “This is a systemic pattern of injustice that’s been occurring since 2017, where students have been withheld those honors from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, where they have not been notified.”

Sears says that the policy put out by the school makes no sense and that it should be abandoned. She said: “I am hopping mad because imagine as a parent you tell your child, son, study hard, daughter, work hard, do well.”

“This is what these children are trying to do. And how dare some of these educators to keep these children’s future in jeopardy like this.”

Asra Nomani and original whistleblower Shawna Yashar also are upset with the delay in notifying students about their merit awards. They say these delays were costly to some of these students regarding their college applications.

Nomani spoke with Fox News and said the following:

“This year, the entire controversy just blew up because the kids got their certificate, weeks after early college application deadlines, just dropped on their desks as if it was just another piece of paper.”

Sears said that policies like this only teach children that they get a participation trophy if they attend school no matter what. However, real life doesn’t work that way, and Sears said that the schools are doing students a disservice when they set up their students like this.
