New Years Mayhem: Islamic Extremist Responsible For NYPD Stabbing Attack

The man has now been identified as 19-year-old Trevor Bickford. According to NY Post, he was already being watched by the FBI.

According to the NY Post, “Bickford, from Wells, Maine, is believed to have recently become a radical Muslim and was on the federal agency’s terrorism “Guardian Watchlist,” even planning to travel to Afghanistan to fight alongside Islamic militants, sources told The Post.”

His diary was discovered. Per the NY Post, “Police said the teen carried a diary and a handwritten manifesto in his backpack, in which he urged his family to ‘please repent to Allah and accept Islam,’ according to sources.”

It sounds as though the teen is ready to die. He arrived in New York alone and was staying at the Bowery Mission. The only belongings noted are the diary, camping gear, and a will. According to NY Post, the sources said, “Two officers working the holiday detail in Times Square were struck in the head with a large knife around 10 PM in the possible targeted attack.”

It continues, “Witnesses said the attacker walked up to the cops without notice and began swinging the weapon, a type of machete known as a Gurkha, according to sources.”

Thankfully, the three officers that were involved in the attack survived. Paul Cozzolino, a rookie, was transported to the hospital for a large gash on his head. Another officer, Louis Iorio, had a skull fracture and was transported to the hospital.

This is thanks to rookie police officer Michael Hanna. Per the NY Post, “A third officer, Michael Hanna, also a rookie, shot Bickford in the shoulder after he and the other two cops were attacked on Eighth Avenue between 51st and 52nd Street, the sources said.”

As of Sunday, Bickford was still at the hospital with pending charges. Per the NY Post, “Sources said the suspected attacker told the feds after his arrest that he hatched the violent plan as recently as Friday. According to the sources, he allegedly said he wanted to attack a uniformed officer or someone armed because they were the ‘enemy of the state.”

Trevor was on the honor roll in high school. He was a well-rounded teenager. However, he found religion after his father’s overdose. That soon turned into extremism, placing him on the FBI watchlist. However, although he did concerning things, it more than likely wasn’t enough for the FBI to act on it.
