A security researcher out of Germany says that he discovered something disturbing recently.

According to JustTheNews, the researcher says that a device he bought on eBay had sensitive personal information from US troops and Afghan allies that assisted our troops on the battlefield.

The data is biometric; the device was listed on eBay for just $149.95. The researcher purchased the device based on a bid of only $68. The New York Times reported that this auction took place in August and that the researcher began to look into what was contained within the device at that time.

The device is a Secure Electronic Enrollment Kit, or SEEK II, and it was last used in Kandahar, Afghanistan, sometime in 2012. However, the researcher found fingerprints, names, and other identifying information for at least 2,632 people on the device.

Matthias Marx is the researcher’s name, and he works with a hacking group known as Chaos Computer Club. He states the following about the information that he found on the device:

“It was disturbing that they didn’t even try to protect the data.”

He also said the following about it:

“They didn’t care about the risk, or they ignored the risk.”

He carried on by saying the following about the device:

“The irresponsible handling of this high-risk technology is unbelievable,” and “It is incomprehensible to us that the manufacturer and former military users do not care that used devices with sensitive data are being hawked online.”

A spokesperson for eBay said that the company does not permit the sale of devices that contain personally identifiable information on them. However, this policy was violated in this instance.

Defense Department press secretary Brig. Gen. Patrick S. Ryder also commented on the disturbing find by saying:

“Because we have not reviewed the information contained on the devices, the department is not able to confirm the authenticity of the alleged data or otherwise comment on it.”

He urged anyone who might have a device that they have continued to use for their benefit to return the device to him immediately.
