Wokeness just got its comeuppance from a big wig in the entertainment industry.

In an interview for the January issue of Reason.com, comedian John Cleese railed on “wokes” as enemies of humor and creativity. According to the Washington Examiner, the 83-year-old blasted the idea that people are used to “deliberately waiting for the thrill of being offended.”.

Cleese said a concern that many have been thinking out loud: “You think of an idea, and you immediately think: ‘Oooh, is that going to get me into trouble? Well, that person last Thursday got away with it.’ But all that stuff immediately stops you from being creative.”

According to Cleese, he believes creative works can only fully be understood through sarcasm and irony. Being politically correct doesn’t cut it but stifles creativity and waters down the comedy.

Last year, according to NewsMax, Cleese stirred controversy, self-proclaiming he blocked himself when he canceled his appearance at the University of Cambridge.

As an entertainer who has been outspoken against woke culture, Cleese did not think twice about canceling when he learned the University had banned a visiting speaker, Andrew Graham-Dixon, an art historian, who did an impression of Adolf Hitler. Cleese had done a similar impression on “Monty Python’s Flying Circus” some years prior.

NewsMax reported that after the incident, Cleese posted on Twitter, “I was looking forward to talking to students at the Cambridge Union this Friday, but I hear that someone there has been blacklisted for doing an impersonation of Hitler.”

Later he took to Twitter again, “I apologise to anyone at Cambridge who was hoping to talk with me, but perhaps some of you can find a venue where woke rules do not apply.”

The Washington Examiner reported the Monty Python actor announced last fall he plans to host a show on a United Kingdom news channel, GB News, which he calls “a free speech channel.” The show will focus on the absurdity of cancel culture.

NewsMax reported that Cleese said, “The woke people, I think, miss something quite badly. The meaning of a word depends on its context. If I use sarcasm, then what I’m meaning is the opposite of the word I’m actually saying. If you don’t get irony, then if you take it seriously, you completely misunderstand the intention of the writer or speaker.”

In a Twitter post about his upcoming show, Cleese teased, “You should be prepared to be shocked.”
