Chaos reigned in Iowa as the House District 81 race was decided with just 11 votes declaring a Republican win.

The Gateway Pundit reported that following four recounts, Democrat Craig Cooper crashed and burned as Republican Luana Stoltenberg took the lead.

WQAD, an ABC affiliate, reported that the recount board conducted both a machine and hand recount. Interestingly, the device showed the Democrat winning, while the hand recount told a different story, with the Republican candidate pulling ahead by just 11 votes.

According to election laws in Iowa, the recount board can choose which results to use when they certify the report. County auditor Kerri Tompkins noted that the recount board chose the hand count instead of the machine count because machines jammed during the counting process. She cited this in her report to the Iowa Secretary of State’s office.

The Quad-City Times reported the board discovered 45 fewer absentee ballots than the county auditor’s count. This is after three days of sorting and counting ballots. The difference was evident, with Cooper receiving 31 fewer votes and Stoltenberg receiving 14 fewer votes.

According to the Blaze, Cooper said, “There were 31 votes that just simply disappeared. I have no idea whether the ballots weren’t run or whether the ballots never existed.”

In a Facebook post, Cooper congratulated Stoltenberg on winning the election.

The Blaze reported a statement from Kevin Hall on behalf of the Iowa Secretary of State’s office saying the recount appeared to be bipartisan as there were one Republican and two Democrats on the recount board. Hall said they all “publicly stated they are confident in the results of their recount, and we thank them for their efforts.”

After the vote, Republicans controlled the state house with 64 seats. The Democrats had 36.
