West Virginia is certainly not the place for Democrats can count on many successes, and it seems like things are just getting worse for them by the day.

The Western Journal reports that State Sen. Glenn Jeffries decided to leave the Democrat Party in favor of becoming a Republican instead. He announced to his constituents on Thursday, according to WVAH-TV. At the time of his party switch, the State Senator did not reveal why he was switching parties.

The Western Journal reports his statement as follows:

"I have the greatest respect for the many friends and supporters I have been blessed with during my time in public office, I hope to continue and strengthen those relationships going forward."

MetroNews reports that Jeffries added the following:

"Our politics have gotten so personal and difficult. I want to make sure that I serve constituents and our state in a respectful, thoughtful way that leads to a better life for all West Virginians."

He recently got some well-deserved credit for bringing economic development to his corner of West Virginia. He won a $500 million investment from investment firm Berkshire Hathaway, which was certainly a big deal for the people who count on him to help them out.

Before the switch, Jeffries was only one of four Democrats in the West Virginia Senate.

West Virginia Democratic Party Chairman Mike Pushkin said the following about the flip:

"For Senator Jeffries to claim he doesn't like the direction of the Democratic Party, barely a week after his new party's de facto leader had dinner with a Holocaust-denying white supremacist, is like being called ugly by a frog,"

He was referring here to President Trump's dinner with Ye (formerly Kayne West) and Nike Fuentes.

Pushkin also pointed to Jeffries previous record on climate issues as something that might cause problems with his move to the Republican

Party. He said the following in a statement:

"Just last year Senator Jeffries received the highest score of any West Virginia Senator from Climate Cabinet Action, a national group dedicated to supporting the best climate and environmental justice champions in statehouses across the country,"

He went on to say that he hoped that the Republicans would be open to someone who is so environmentally minded.

Given that West Virginia is a state that is highly reliant on coal, it might be indicative of why the Senate is 31-3 in favor of Republicans and the state House is 88-11 in favor of Republicans.
