The New York Times reports that California might give black residents as much as $223,000 each in reparations.

This is based on information from the state's reparations task force.

This task force comprises nine members and has been authorized by Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom. The tax force recommended a total of $569 billion in reparations based on housing discrimination and other discriminatory issues that specifically targeted black residents in the past. The final recommendations are not due to the Governor until June 2023, so the number could go even higher.

The New York Times reports an estimated 2.5 million black residents in California. That makes up just 6.5% of the California population. As such, each one of those residents could receive as much as $223,000.

A professor at the University of California Berkeley says the following about the situation:

"We are looking at reparations on a scale that is the largest since Reconstruction."

Governor Newsom appears to be pushing for this plan to go forward quickly because he vetoed a bill in September that would have allowed the committee to have pushed off their recommendations for how much money to send out to 2024.

Most task force members suggest that housing and tuition assistance should be considered. However, the Daily Caller reports that some members are pushing hard for direct cash payments.

California's budget as a state is expected to be as much as $25 billion short after a decline in tax revenues of $41 billion over the next year or so. This may be because many people are leaving California in droves based on specific liberal policies that the state has advocated for.

Newsom's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment by the Daily Caller. Instead, they have kept their heads down and continue to barrel toward this tight deadline.
