Throughout Phoenix, over 1,000 homeless people call the streets home.

The consequence is an astounding amount of garbage. This garbage call for massive city clean-ups. However, one organization wants the clean-ups to stop. You’re not going to believe why or what this organization is doing.

The Blaze has more on the story. This news source says, “While local businesses claim the mess is a public nuisance, the American Civil Liberties Union believes constitutional rights are being violated despite ample warning and signage from the city regarding the sweeps.”

They continue to inform us why the ACLU wants the city to look like a landfill. Per The Blaze, “The ACLU refers to the garbage clean-ups as “raids.” The organization states that the raids “seize, impound and destroy unsheltered individuals’ personal property and survival gear for no reason.” This organization claims that the city refuses to address the problem of homelessness and instead punishes the homeless.

However, the city of Phoenix tells a different story. According to whec.com, “city spokesman Dan Wilson outlined the strategies that Phoenix has taken to address homelessness, including the dedication of nearly $50 million during the last fiscal year to solutions such as shelters, more affordable housing, and mental health services.

He said the city added 592 new beds to homeless shelters in 2022.” The city claims the sweeps are completed to protect the safety of people living on the streets.

Businesses nearby are happy with the clean-up efforts. Per whec.com, “Earlier this year, a group of business owners and residential neighbors of the encampment known as “The Zone” filed a lawsuit against the city, asking Phoenix to declare the site a public nuisance.”

Phoenix is one of many cities to do sweeps or clean-ups like this. They are common in California as well. Governor Newsom has also issued more money to combat the homelessness problem in the state.
