That the revelations about how children are being indoctrinated in questionable things due to remote learning caused by the pandemic have outraged parents is putting the matter mildly.

Charter schools, private schools, and even homeschooling have seen a boom as parents yank their kids out of public schools. For some reason, parents object to their children being taught Critical Race Theory and LBGT identity politics.

Just The News reports on one state where the migration from public schools is not occurring.

"Utah bucked the national trend by gaining more students enrolling in public schools when almost every other state lost students to alternative education options, according to a new report."

Nationwide, according to the National Alliance for Charter Schools, close to 1.5 million children left public schools for alternative education during the COVID-19 pandemic. Nearly every state saw a decrease in public school enrollment.

Utah was an exception, with an increase of 7,925 public school students between the 2019-2020 school year and the 2020-2021 school year. Charter schools in the state also say a modest increase.

The reasons that Utah bucked the trends seen by most of the rest of the nation are unclear. However, one clue is suggested in state outcomes related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"However, in a study conducted by the National Bureau of Economic Research that looked at COVID outcomes in the 50 states in terms of the economy, education, and mortality." Utah ranked first.

"States at the bottom were those who had the strictest COVID-19 policies and were among the last to return to in-person education." The finding suggests that Utah, with a relatively loose COVID-19 mandate regime, managed to maintain parental trust in its public school system. Not many states were able to make the same claim, according to the charter school study.

"Public education is a public trust, and these enrollment numbers suggest that trust may have been shaken. During the pandemic school years, we searched for charter school enrollment patterns related to geography or race. The only clear pattern we could find is that charter school growth happened almost everywhere, as did growth in homeschooling and private schools."

Idaho also bucked the nationwide trend of students leaving public schools, albeit on a smaller scale. Its public school system gained 364 students at the same time as Utah's. The numbers suggest a lesson for other states. Schools should pay more attention to student's needs and parents' desires for the education they want.
