It has been big announcement after big announcement from Elon Musk since he purchased Twitter.

Now, he has come up with yet another one. He says that he might look at creating an alternative smartphone.

The Daily Caller reported conservative commentator Liz Wheeler tweeted the following: “If Apple & Google boot Twitter from their app stores, @elonmusk should produce his own smartphone.”

This spurred Musk to respond to it directly. He said that he hopes it doesn’t come to that, but he said that he has plans for how he could create his own smartphone if it becomes necessary to do so.

Phil Schiller is the senior Apple executive who runs the app store. He had a Twitter account prior to the Musk takeover, but he deleted his account after Musk purchased the company. This led to rampant speculation that Apple might consider ditching Twitter from its app store. If it were to do so, it could be a massive blow to the company.

Many people use their iPhones to get access to Twitter, and Twitter is certainly a mobile-first company. If Apple removed the social media app from its store, then Twitter might struggle to gain the kind of traction that it needs.

“Failure to adhere to Apple’s and Google’s guidelines would be catastrophic, risking Twitter’s expulsion from their app stores and making it more difficult for billions of potential users to get Twitter’s services,” said Yoel Roth, who was the former head of trust and safety at Twitter.

Indeed, even those who used to work for the company can see that there would be major issues for Twitter if the company was booted from the smartphones that it currently relies on.

Despite the potential threat of Apple and Google removing Twitter from its stores, there has been no word from either of those companies about doing so. Also, Musk states that he could simply build his own smartphone to counteract whatever these companies might want to do.
