A new technology rolling out in the San Francisco Police Department has many people raising eyebrows.

The department released information that it intends to authorize a small unit of robots to aid the police. That alone wouldn't be that stunning, but the fact that the proposed robots would be authorized to kill is.

Many are concerned about the legality of robots that are programmed to kill. People are also concerned that such programming could be faulty and cause innocent people to get injured or killed. Also, there is always the concern of hacking that never goes away.

Mission Local reported that the proposal for these robot officers is set to go to the Board of Supervisors next week.

The proposal states that the department already has 17 robots that they use in their law enforcement duties. Only 12 of those robots currently work.

The draft of the proposal to allow those robots to use deadly force in certain circumstances states the following:

"remotely controlled unmanned machine that operates on the ground, which is utilized to enhance the safety of the community and officers by providing ground support and situational awareness for law enforcement operations."

The draft continues by saying that only specific operators would be permitted to control the robots.

The proposal states that the robots would be permitted to use deadly force if the life of the officer is in danger.

The Western Journal reports that the proposal states:

"The robots listed in this section shall not be utilized outside of training and simulations, criminal apprehensions, critical incidents, exigent circumstances, executing a warrant or during suspicious device assessments. Robots will only be used as a deadly force option when risk of loss of life to members of the public or officers is imminent and outweighs any other force option available to SFPD,"

Tifanei Moyer is an attorney for the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights and is concerned about the legal ramifications of robots that are permitted to use deadly force upon people.

The lawyer said the following in an e-mail to Mission Local:

"We are living in a dystopian future, where we debate whether the police may use robots to execute citizens without a trial, jury, or judge," The lawyer continued by saying that nothing about this proposal is normal and that they would recommend that the city did NOT move forward with this one.
