The first Starbucks to unionize was in the restaurant’s home city, Seattle.

Now, that same Starbucks is closing its doors soon.

According to CNN, “A company spokesperson cited safety concerns, saying that “unfortunately, despite several mitigating efforts, safety and security incidents at our Broadway and Denny store have continued to escalate.” The spokesperson said the store will be closed to customers on December 9.”

This isn’t the first Starbucks to close due to safety concerns. According to Starbucks CEO, more stores will close their doors after this one. Some feel it’s an effort to stamp out the union that seems to be taking hold.

CNN Business reports, “‘This is the most clear-cut case of retaliation this company has shown closing a union store yet,’ Starbucks Workers United said in a statement on the closure. ‘Starbucks and Howard Schultz are playing petty games with workers’ lives. They lack respect not only for the rights of their workers but for the law of this country.’”

According to the union, this is not the first Starbucks location that has been closed. CNN Business informs us, “The union has filed hundreds of unfair labor practice complaints against the company since last year. The National Labor Relations Board has also issued complaints against Starbucks. In June, workers claimed a location in Ithaca, New York was being closed in retaliation for unionizing.”

Efforts to unionize Starbucks have been picking up in the past year. Over 250 stores voted to unionize. However, there are no new contracts, even in stores that are supposed to be unions. The lack of unions in stores and what is being called a retaliation effort from the company resulted in employees striking. However, Starbucks does serve as an inspiration for others. For example, some Apple employees now push for a union.
