Violence against police officers remains at an all-time high, but some people know that police officers are doing the right thing. Then, other people will rush to help someone in need, including a police officer like this teen.

She was near the scene when a police officer was shot twice by a suspect. Fox News reports, “Donegan and her friend were on a shopping trip and were stopped at an intersection in Excelsior Springs on October 1 when Donegan saw Stott get shot twice by a suspect with a warrant out for his arrest, according to the authorities.”

Instead of running away, this teen ran toward the injured officer. Fox says, “When the officer said, ‘Can you help me with my tourniquet?’ I was like, ‘Absolutely. I can help you with your tourniquet.’ It was handy to have that knowledge from my dad,” 17-year-old high schooler Ava Donegan told reporters of the October incident when she jumped into action to help Excelsior Springs officer Andrew Stott.

Her father is a critical care nurse who taught his family how to use a tourniquet properly, the Courier-Tribune reported.”

Donegan retrieved his tourniquet and helped apply it properly to minimize the injury. She was also able to use his radio for him to get help immediately.

During the incident, Donegan was unaware of what would happen as she rushed to help the wounded officer. She had no idea whether more bullets were coming or the danger was over. Many people would have run away, but she ran towards the officer to ensure he had the help he needed.

On Thursday, she received several awards for her bravery. Fox reports, “The teenager was honored Thursday with a handful of awards for her bravery, including the first-commissioned sheriff’s office challenge coin by Clay County Sheriff Will Akin, as well as a challenge coin by Excelsior Springs Police Chief Greg Dull. Excelsior Springs Mayor Sharon Powell also presented Donegan with a $2,000 scholarship from a local Ford dealership.”

In a day where many people support violence against police officers, it’s great to see teenagers that support our men in blue.
