Several national medical associations and four doctors are collectively suing the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) over approving abortion drugs that these groups say are harmful to women.

Alliance Defending Freedom represents the groups, and their lawsuit makes the following claim:

"the FDA failed America's women and girls when it chose politics over science and approved chemical abortion drugs for use in the United States."

According to the lawsuit, the FDA must classify pregnancy as an illness to approve these drugs. The lawsuit also points out that the FDA needed to prove that the drugs it approved had a "meaningful therapeutic benefit" to women for them to be approved by the organization.

ADF Senior Counsel Julie Marie Blake issued a press release in which she stated the following:

"Pregnancy is not an illness, and chemical abortion drugs don't provide a therapeutic benefit—they end a baby's life, and they pose serious and life-threatening complications to the mother."

The group seeks to get FDA-approved abortion pills off store shelves. They don't want to see them available at all. The lawsuit points to the idea that the FDA eliminated numerous safeguards that would have made it more challenging for certain people to get these pills. According to the lawsuit, lowering those safeguards puts everyone at risk when they get these pills.

In 2021, the FDA approved for doctors to send abortion pills through the mail to pregnant women.

The group suing says that the FDA approval of abortion pills through the mail has always been on shaky ground both from a legal and moral standpoint. They are aggressively going after this specifically as they feel it is unreasonable for the FDA to stand by the idea that women can order something harmful to them through the mail.
