ABC News reports the COVID-19 public health emergency will stay in place through January 11.

On Thursday, the Biden administration extended the health emergency in anticipation of an increase in cases this winter.

When the pandemic emergency was first declared nearly three years ago, on January 27, 2020, the public health plan was scheduled to be renewed every 90 days.

COVID-19 was at the forefront of many people’s minds, and when the emergency was declared, it authorized free testing, treatment, and vaccines. Medicaid coverage was expanded, and telehealth was accessible to Medicare recipients.

The Daily Caller notes that once the declaration of a public health emergency is lifted, millions of people will be unenrolled from Medicaid and insurance programs for children.

Republicans want the public health emergency to end and have pressed the Biden administration to do so. The President has done the opposite by urging Congress to provide more monetary aid to pay for testing and COVID-19 vaccines. At one time during the pandemic, the government offered free COVID-19 tests and testing. The free services have since ceased last month due to insufficient money to assist.
