The soon-to-be former Speaker may be disinclined to become House Minority Leader in any case. So, who will follow her? The New York Post suggests that a candidate for Democratic House Leader has emerged.

“Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, long considered a frontrunner to replace House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, may have his moment as minority leader if Democrats lose control of the chamber and Pelosi steps down, insiders told The Post.

“Jeffries, 52, who lives in Prospect Heights and represents parts of Brooklyn and Queens, is the fifth-ranking Democrat in Congress as caucus chair and has made it known he wants to move up.”

Jeffries would bring a younger generation of leadership to the House Democrats. Most other Democrats in leadership positions are, like Pelosi, in their 80s. He is said to be well-liked by most of the House Democrats. However, that affection is not universal.

Some believe the New York Democrat was too close to former Governor Andrew Cuomo for comfort. Cuomo resigned under a cloud due to sexual harassment allegations, and his moving of COVID-19-infected patients to senior assisted living homes resulted in numerous deaths of older adults.

Another group of House members also finds Jeffries objectionable.
“But another Democratic strategist said Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-Bronx/Queens) and her socialist ‘Squad’ would not go for Jeffries.
“’ Not only has he personally not worked to reach out to progressives over the course of his growth to possible majority leader/minority leader, his policies haven’t either,’ the strategist said.”

Nevertheless, according to the Post Millennial, Jeffries has started to make moves to position himself to become House Democratic Leader.
“New York Representative Hakeem Jeffries met with South Carolina Representative Jim Clyburn, who is the House Majority Whip, on September 1 in a meeting at Clyburn’s Washington office to discuss Jeffries taking leadership of the Democrat party in the House of Representatives from current House Speaker Nancy Pelosi after the midterm election.”

Jeffries has a rival for the House Minority Leader post, which is why he met with Clyburn.
“Jeffries, who is the fifth-ranking Democrat at the moment, requested the meeting to head off a potential vie for leadership from California Representative Adam Schiff and to position himself as a successor to Pelosi, whether she ran for leadership again or not.”
If Clyburn, who, like Jeffries, is a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, lends his support to the younger man, his accession is assured.
