The city of Columbus isn't waiting around after a court ruling deemed that cities could pass new gun restriction laws.

A state gun-rights group says that the ruling doesn't permit cities to pass their gun laws like this.

In 2018, a judge ruled that cities were not permitted to create drug restrictions that flew in the face of state or federal law. This was related to a lawsuit that was filed three years prior. However, that ruling was also used as a basis for gun restrictions.

Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther says that the new gun restrictions will protect the victims of domestic abuse and violence. He also said that these regulations would close the gap between what is legal in Columbus and what is legal in the rest of the state and country. In other words, he wants a tighter grip on gun laws within Columbus.

The mayor stated the following:

"Every person in every neighborhood deserves to be safe. These proposed new laws bolster the work of the Comprehensive Neighborhood Safety Strategy and get more guns out of the hands of those who misuse them."

The mayor may be saying that, but the Buckeye Firearms Association believes that the court ruling does NOT make it clear that cities can create their gun laws. That is why they are pushing back against the idea that the city of Columbus can do something like this on its own. The executive director of the organization said:

"Our reading of this ruling is that it is narrowly focused on the issue of municipal zoning for firearm manufacturers,"

The legislation proposed in Columbus would prohibit the ownership of large-capacity magazines and require secure storage of guns that gun owners do have.

Gun violence remains a major problem in Columbus, and it will be interesting to see how the law is understood in this case.
