One of the more heart-breaking defeats suffered by Republicans in the 2022 midterm elections was that of Lee Zeldin for Governor of New York at the hands of that office’s current occupant, Kathy Hochul.

The New York Post reports that Zeldin accepts his defeat gracefully.

“He may not have secured his victory, but Republican Lee Zeldin insisted to The Post on Wednesday he had ‘zero regret’ over the race he ran — as records show he notched the best total-vote performance of any GOP candidate since Nelson Rockefeller 52 years ago.”

Zeldin noted that his defeat was not total. It had a silver lining.

“In his first interview since conceding to Gov. Kathy Hochul, Zeldin said his surprisingly strong campaign wasn’t in vain because it helped the Republican party nab other ballot victories in critical House and state Senate races.”

Some analysts have suggested that the flip of several New York House seats from Democrat to Republican may prove decisive in delivering control of the House of Representatives to the GOP. Zeldin also noted that he did far better than previous Republican candidates running for statewide office in New York.

The longshot Republican challenger managed to pull in more votes even than the last Republican to win a gubernatorial election, George Pataki — who stunned three-term incumbent Mario Cuomo in 1994 to start his three-term tenure, election records show.

The Long Island congressman received at least 2.66 million votes, which tops the highest Pataki scored when he cruised to his second term in 1998. Rockefeller garnered around 3 million votes in each of his four elections.

“Zeldin also improved the GOP’s performance by more than 400,000 votes over the 2.2 million ballots cast for Marc Molinaro in 2018 when the Dutchess County executive challenged Andrew Cuomo, who was seeking his third term as governor.”

Zeldin conceded to Hocul with the following statement, according to Channel 6 News in Albany:

“I would like to congratulate New York Governor Kathy Hochul on her election to a full four-year term.

“This race was a once-in-a-generation campaign, with a very close margin in the bluest of blue states. Our grassroots volunteers and supporters' unrelenting passion and hard work made this incredibly close race possible and helped us win at least 49 of New York’s 62 counties. Republicans, Democrats, and Independents united as New Yorkers, pouring their heart and soul into this campaign...”

He finished his statement with a warning that New York voters are still concerned about the issues of inflation and crime.
