The COVID-19 vaccine remains in the news as a hot topic as GOP lawmakers request President Biden to reverse the mandate as an American hero is facing discharge from military service.

According to The Daily Signal, a group of Republican lawmakers is requesting that Biden reassess the policy for “religious exemptions from the COVID-19 vaccination order implemented by the U.S. Coast Guard. If the policy isn’t changed, the heroic work of a service member who President Biden thanked last month will be given his walking papers.

A letter sent to President Biden, Alejandro Mayorkas, Department of Homeland Security Secretary, and Linda Fagan, U.S. Coast Guard Commandant, points out the concerns and issues surrounding the current mandate for COVID-19 vaccinations.

The letter, in part, says, “Service members that have not obtained a COVID-19 vaccine risk an involuntary administrative separation. This policy has resulted in hundreds of service members from all branches getting involuntarily discharged.”

The letter also mentioned a phone call between President Biden and Aviation Survival Technician Second Class Zach Loesch. Loesch reportedly went above and beyond during Hurricane Ian when he reportedly rescued an elderly woman and her husband by helicopter.

Because Loesch had not received the COVID-19 vaccination, he stands to be discharged from the U.S. Coast Guard. He had requested a religious exemption before the incident, but it was denied.

According to information in the letter, the U.S. Coast Guard has received more than 1,200 requests for a religious exemption, and of that number, only 12 have been approved.

According to Fox News, nearly 20,000 service members will be involuntarily discharged in the next few months because of the COVID-19 vaccine mandate. Last month, Biden announced the COVID-19 pandemic was over.

A request from The Daily Signal to the Department of Homeland Security for comment has received no immediate response.
