In a letter to President Biden on Monday, a 30-member group of liberal politicians is asking the President to forego the current approach and change to a different strategy regarding America’s support of Ukraine.

The liberal group is recommending the change should be to negotiate with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

According to the Daily Caller article, several representatives include Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar of Wisconsin, and Pramila Jayapal of Washington, plus 27 Democratic congress members representative of states across the country.

According to the letter sent to the President, the group wants a diplomatic approach that includes a ceasefire by directly talking to Russia. While the group noted their agreement with Biden’s approach not to interfere with the decisions made by another government, the group noted their feelings that “tens of billions of U.S. taxpayer dollars in military assistance” is something the U.S. should consider to “seriously explore all possible avenues” to avoid nuclear war.

The letter stated, “We urge you to make vigorous diplomatic efforts in support of a negotiated settlement and ceasefire, engage in direct talks with Russia, explore prospects for a new European security arrangement acceptable to all parties that will allow for a sovereign and independent Ukraine, and, in coordination with our Ukrainian partners, seek a rapid end to the conflict and reiterate this goal as America’s chief priority.”

Economic benefits via peaceful negotiations is another area the group’s letter referenced that could be possible with a ceasefire. The group feels these benefits would include lowered oil prices and a decrease in the shortage of food across the globe. Also, the fear of a nuclear attack would lessen.

The letter stated, “The risk of nuclear weapons being used is estimated to be higher now than at any time since the height of the Cold War. Given the catastrophic possibilities of nuclear escalation and miscalculation, which only increase the longer this war continues, we agree with your goal of avoiding direct military conflict as an overriding national security priority.”

According to the Daily Caller, support of the letter is possible from both parties, which include Republicans who’ve criticized Biden’s spending policies to support Ukraine and its $40 billion aid package.

Republican Rand Paul stated, “Sending $40 billion to another country without having someone look and make sure no one is stealing the money is a recipe for disaster.”

A response to the Daily Caller News to the White House was not immediately forthcoming.
