In a report from Fox News, the Supreme Court will hear two affirmative action cases scheduled in October.

The Washington Post released its findings of a new post that shows a survey of American adults regarding the banning of race as a consideration during college admissions resulted in 63 percent in support of banning the practice.

According to the Fox News article, George Mason University and The Washington Post conducted the poll asking adults to respond to a question about American colleges’ racial diversity programs.

The article reports the question asked was, “Would you support or oppose the Supreme Court banning colleges and universities from considering a student’s race and ethnicity when making decisions about student admissions?” The breakdown of the respondents was that 63 percent supported banning the practice, and 36 percent supported it staying in place.

Fox News also reports that a majority of respondents to the question, “programs designed to increase the racial diversity of students on college campuses are a (good thing), or a (bad thing),” responded that the programs are good.

The question earned 64 percent of respondents agreeing the programs were a “good thing” and intended to increase racial diversity on college campuses among students. Those that felt it was a “bad thing” earned 36 percent.

Information shared with The Washington Post by Justin Gest, associate professor in the Schar School of Policy and Government at George Mason University, suggests that the poll results show universities promote diversity without discriminating by race.

Gest said, “So the message to universities seems to be: Cultivate and champion diversity without discriminating by race and ethnicity.”

A Campus Reform student and correspondent at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, Chloe Teachey, said she was disappointed in the university. She said, “As the daughter of an Asian immigrant, I am particularly disappointed that my university, UNC-Chapel Hill, hypocritically claims to promote diversity while taking away chances from Asian Americans.”

In the Fox News report, Teachey summed it up when she said, “Eliminating affirmative action does not mean opposing diversity. Universities would base admissions decisions on academics and extracurricular activities, not skin color. There are other ways to promote diversity within the merit system.”
